There was once a time where multiplayer gaming would entail players gaming on the same setup and using the same screen. This form of video gaming was not too long ago and still exists today.

Many exciting meetups with your friends and family members would include video gaming sessions at someone’s house, and you would host a mini tournament to see who came out on top for a given game, whether it be Call of Duty or Borderlands.

Nowadays, this form of entertainment is not as popular as pretty much everybody has their own consoles or setups, and the world of online gaming has revolutionized the industry. MMO games and other games which included an multiplayer element have completely taken over, kicking split screen gaming to the curb.

For many people like me who grew up playing video games via the split screen element, the thrill and pressure of competing with your opponent side to side was an unparalleled experience and one which brought a very real feel to competitive gaming.

When it comes to competitive gaming, it is fair to say that Fortnite is one of the most competitive battle royale games out there right now and luckily for all those split screen gaming enthusiasts, it has this feature incorporated.

The only thing you will need to play split screen on Fortnite is a spare controller and you begin the action! There are a few simple steps to follow in order to set up but the process is relatively short and easy to follow.

Without further ado, here is how to play split screen on Fortnite. The processes may vary slightly depending on which console you play on, but overall it is almost the same.

Epic Games’ guide on how to play split screen on Fortnite

  • Start Fortnite.
  • Navigate to the Main Menu.
  • Make sure the second controller is connected to the console and is turned on.
  • Once it's connected, the first player will need to invite the second player to select their account.
  • Once signed into their account, the second player will appear in the lobby and split-screen will automatically turn on when you start a game.

How to play split screen on PlayStation

You'll need a spare controller, and a secondary PlayStation Network account saved on your system to initiate the split screen mode in Fortnite.

Launch the game with your primary PlayStation Network account and create either a duo or squad lobby since these are the only two modes you'll be able to play on split screen.

Once you set up the lobby, turn on the second controller, and select your spare PlayStation Network account when the system asks you, "Who is using this controller?".

Once you have selected your user, a small menu item will appear on the bottom right corner and will prompt you with an option to press and hold X to log in as Player 2. Once you do this, Fortnite will restart itself and ask you to link an account if you have not already done so.

If the second player has a Fortnite account of their own, they'll need to enter the code that appears on your screen by navigating to Epic Games' activation page and logging into their account. We recommend completing this process via a phone or tablet since it can be harder to navigate around PlayStation's browser.

If the second player does not have a Fortnite account of their own, then the game will require you to create an account on Epic Games in order to continue playing via the split screen mode.

And there you have it. Once you load into a game, you will be able to play split screen with your duo!

How to play split screen on Xbox

The process is very similar to that of PlayStation’s and should not take any longer.

You will need to set up a duo or squad’s lobby, as once again you will not be able to play any other mode, and sign in on a separate account via the “Switch Profile” option.

After completing the login process, a new menu item on the bottom right corner of your screen should appear. Pressing and holding the A button will let the second player log into Fortnite, but the game may ask you to link a Fortnite account first.

If you have a Fortnite account that you use to play on a different device, you can link to your Xbox account by entering the code that will appear on the screen via Epic’s activation page once again.
