Netflix is teaming up with Assassin's Creed developer and publishers Ubisoft, to create a live action TV series based on the popular action-adventure video game.

The streaming giant announced the news on Twitter via a very brief clip, showcasing the Netflix logo weaved inside the classic Assassin’s Creed emblem.

Assassin’s Creed is one of the highest-selling video game franchises in the world and is Ubisoft’s best-selling video game franchise ever; it was adapted as a movie back in 2016 but was heavily criticized and underperformed at the box office.

Now, with the announcement of a Netflix produced TV series, fans are hoping that this time Assassin’s Creed will get a much better, live action representation in a dramatized show, and so are we.

As part of the deal, Netflix and Ubisoft have promised to deliver a variety of Assassin’s Creed themed content, including a live action, animated and anime series, with Ubisoft’s Jason Altman and Danielle Kreinik serving as executive producers for the live action one.

The first series is described as an "epic, genre-bending live-action adaptation" and is currently searching for a showrunner.

“We’re excited to partner with Ubisoft and bring to life the rich, multilayered storytelling that Assassin’s Creed is beloved for,” said Peter Friedlander, VP, Original Series at Netflix.

“From its breathtaking historical worlds and massive global appeal as one of the best selling video game franchises of all time, we are committed to carefully crafting epic and thrilling entertainment based on this distinct IP and provide a deeper dive for fans and our members around the world to enjoy.”

Jason Altman, who is the Head of Ubisoft Film & Television in Los Angeles also commented on the deal: “For more than 10 years, millions of fans around the world have helped shape the Assassin’s Creed brand into an iconic franchise.

“We’re thrilled to create an Assassin’s Creed series with Netflix and we look forward to developing the next saga in the Assassin’s Creed universe."

This is not the first time we have seen a video game turned into a live action TV series; both ‘The Witcher’ and ‘Resident Evil’ are TV franchises at Netflix that originated as successful video games, with The Witcher’s live action adaptation matching similar success.

This is also not the first project Ubisoft has announced with Netflix in recent months. In July, Variety exclusively reported that the companies had partnered on a “Splinter Cell” anime series hailing from “John Wick” writer Derek Kolstad.

Furthermore, Ubisoft and Netflix are currently working on the film “The Division” starring Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhaal, while the streamer has already aired four seasons of the Ubisoft animated series “Rabbids Invasion.”

We are praying that, this time, Assassin’s Creed in the flesh does not disappoint.
